Wow, what a gem I found yesterday.
While there’s no secret, I’m rather addicted to these tower/turret defense games, there are some really bad ones out there. This one, thankfully, is not.
This game is set using mages (ranged) and dexers (melee) from a “pre-pub 16″ Ultima Online (because let’s face it, the developer is clearly not a fan of trammies, so he has to be old school.) There are 6 maps to choose from, each one more challenging than the next, and each one requiring a different type of build than the one before.
The game has very simple point-and-click controls, place your “tower” on a spot along the path, upgrade when able. You cannot sell, but this was described as developed as intended, so place wisely.
Various UO “Creeps” will run through the gauntlet you’ve set up, with your defenses gaining experience for every kill and money so that you can upgrade them. Once one of your mages or dexers have leveled up to Adept, two advanced fighters for that class will be unlocked: Necromancers & Alchemists for the mages, and Dryad Archers & Chiv Dexers for the dexers.
This game can be quite challenging, the first 3 maps have taken up a good chunk of my afternoon yesterday and most of my morning today, with the lack of the ability to sell a tower if you don’t have things placed *just right* you can find yourself in a losing battle in a hurry.
Disappointing to me was the “Custom Level” feature, where unless you had a code from someone, there really is no way to play any custom levels, so the long term playability of this game is cut short there.
All in all, the game is a great time killer. Time for me to get back to tossing a daemon lord, here’s the final numbers:
Addiction Level: 8 – A couple runs in and I was hooked.
Graphics: 6 – It’s Ultima Online 2d graphics, so you’re looking at something you saw in 1996.
Sound: 5 – Same as above, Ultima Online sounds. The mute feature is nice, as the swords slicing sound can get annoying.
Gameplay: 8 – The ability to sell would’ve made this much better.
Replayability: 7 – Unless you have custom level codes, once you beat the 6 maps you’re pretty much done.
OVERALL: 6.8
